Formed in 2011, SMC Solar Ltd first began life as SMC Ltd in 1997 as a management consultancy company operating mainly in the rail sector. It peaked at 50 employees in 2000 before changes in the rail industry precipitated a major downturn in the UK railway consultancy sector.
In 2005 SMC diversified into the health sector where the management skills and knowledge gained through the ‘privatisation’ of the rail sector became valuable and transferable skills, as the health sector itself progressed through its own form of government inspired privatisation.
While retaining these core management consultancy and project management skills another complete diversification occurred in 2007 when SMC Ltd expanded into Electrical Contracting, specialising in Inspection and Testing. Again, developing the transferable skills gained in the rail and health sector where SMC had gained considerable experience in the management of safety related practices and management processes, the move into the Inspection and Testing side of Electrical Contracting (i.e. the safety management processes) was a natural extension of the core business.
In 2010, with the advent of Feed-in-Tariffs as a huge Government backed incentivisation scheme to encourage installation of solar PV on homes and businesses throughout the country, SMC Solar Ltd acquired the necessary skills to provide services in this new emerging market. The demand for solar PV installation is now so huge that solar panel installation has become the core part of SMC Solar Ltd’s business.
